Insulin lispro 50%, insulin lispro protamine susp 50% (rDNA origin)
Indications/Uses
Patients w/ DM who require insulin for the maintenance of normal glucose homeostasis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dosage. Administer only by SC inj in the upper arms, thighs, buttocks, or abdomen.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Administer immediately before or after meals.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Do not administer IV. Uncorrected hypoglycaemic reactions can cause loss of consciousness, coma, or death. Potentially lethal hyperglycaemia & diabetic ketoacidosis may occur w/ inadequate dosages or discontinuation of treatment especially in IDDM. Renal & hepatic impairment. Presence of illness or emotional disturbances. Patients undertake increased physical activity or changed usual diet. Concomitant use w/ thiazolidinediones. May impair the ability to drive or use machinery. Pregnancy (carefully monitor glucose control) & lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycaemia. Redness, swelling & itching at the inj site; lipodystrophy; edema.
Drug Interactions
Increased insulin requirements by OCs, corticosteroids, or thyroid replacement therapy, danazol, β2 stimulants (eg, ritodrine, salbutamol, terbutaline). Reduced insulin requirements w/ oral hypoglycemics, salicylates, sulpha antibiotics, MAOIs, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, β-blockers, octreotide or alcohol.
